How to Include Your Dog in Memorial Day Celebrations

|

Memorial Day weekend means parades, backyard barbecues, and quality time with the people (and pets) you love. The good news is that your dog doesn't have to miss out on any of it.

There are plenty of ways to include your dog in the festivities, and with a little planning, you can make the holiday fun and safe for your furry family member.

Here are some tips for making the most of Memorial Day with your pup:

Taking Your Dog to a Memorial Day Parade

Many Memorial Day parades are dog-friendly, making them a great outing for your pup. That being said, the crowds, noise, and activity can be a lot to take in, especially for dogs that are shy or easily overwhelmed.

If you bring your dog along, keep them on a leash at all times and steer clear of parade floats and performers. Pack plenty of water and some snacks, and consider bringing a small umbrella or portable shade so your pup has a cool spot to rest between all the excitement.

Helping Your Dog Through Fireworks

Fireworks are one of the trickiest parts of Memorial Day for dog owners. Many dogs are genuinely frightened by the loud booms and flashes, and it's more common than you might think.

If your pup struggles with fireworks, set them up in a quiet, comfortable space before the show starts, whether that's their crate, a bedroom, or wherever they feel most secure. Extra cuddles, a favorite toy, and a few treats can go a long way in helping them feel calm until it's over.

Keeping Your Dog Safe Around Water

If your Memorial Day plans involve a lake, river, or backyard pool, there are a few things to keep in mind before letting your dog take the plunge:

  • Not every dog is a natural swimmer, so always make sure your pup is comfortable in the water before letting them go deeper.
  • Never leave them unattended near water.
  • Consider a dog life jacket if they'll be swimming in open or deep water.

And don't forget to bring plenty of fresh drinking water throughout the day; dogs can get dehydrated quickly in the summer heat, even when they're splashing around.

If your Memorial Day plans involve traveling without your dog, Camp Bow Wow provides dog daycare and boarding services to make sure your pup has a great weekend too. Our Camps are a safe, fun, and caring home away from home while you're away. Contact your local Camp to schedule your pup's stay before spots fill up for the holiday weekend.
