Summer Safety Tips All Dog Owners Should Know

If there’s one thing that (literally) brightens everyone’s mood, it’s the return of summer! Finally, the days are longer and the weather makes you want to take your pup out for a long walk each and every day. And while that is a great idea, there are a few things you should know before you and your pup hit the trails on a hot day.

1. Your pup needs just as much (if not more) water as you.

Going for a long walk? Each time you stop to take a sip of water, give your dog some. Dehydration is a very real possibility for dogs in the summer. Whenever you step outside, have a water bottle just for your dog on you and know the warning signs of dehydration:

  • Heavy panting
  • Bright red gums
  • Shaky legs
  • Thick, persistent drool

2. Never leave your pet in the car.

This can’t be said enough — never leave your pet alone in a hot car! Even if you’re just running to grab something inside, take your furry friend with you. Because of their fur, a dog’s body temperature can rise much faster than a human’s.

3. Be wary of hot grounds.

Remember: your pup doesn’t wear shoes like us two-legged folk. If you’re walking across a paved parking lot on a 100-degree day, feel the ground before stepping onto it with your pup. You’d be surprised by how hot the ground can get. If it is hot, consider carrying your pet or pushing him in the cart.

4. Don’t shave your pet.

Unbeknownst to many well-intentioned owners, shaving your dog in the summer doesn’t help to keep them cool. In fact, it only leaves them more susceptible to sunburn. Most dogs naturally shed in the summer, so as long as you keep up with regular groomings, they should be just fine!

The pet care industry is growing faster each year, and Camp Bow Wow is right there with it! In fact, the American Pet Products Association estimates that pet parents across the nation spent over $70 billion dollars on pet care products and services in 2018 alone. At that rate, it’s no surprise that the future for current and prospective franchise owners is bright!
