Hot Spots

Hot spots are localized areas of skin inflammation and infection. The infection can be superficial or deep. Other common names for this condition include: moist dermatitis, and acute moist dermatitis.

•        Symptoms

o       redness, oozing, pain

o       hair loss

o       highly agitated mood

o       sensitivity when touched

•        Causes

o       external parasites (fleas or mites)

o       insect sting or bite

o       allergies (food, inhalant, contact)

o       injury (skin wound, scrape, etc)

o       boredom or stress-related psychological problems

•        Treatment

o       shave area & get air to the infected area

o       cleanse with cool water & gentle skin cleanser

o       cool compress the area 2-4 times/day with cool washcloth

o       vet prescribed antibiotic topical drying sprays or medications

o       prevent licking, biting, and scratching area
