A final word about taking your dog to the park. Keep in mind how important it is for your dog to be vaccinated as it will protect them and the other dogs around them. Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella, and possibly the Canine Influenza Vaccine. For more info on protecting your dog please call your vet office.

Long Island City

Murray Playground

This is a smaller dog run, but large enough for your dog to get some much needed exercise. Located at the corner of 21st St and 45th avenue, this dog run is sure to please! The kind residents of LIC have installed some chairs to lounge on, and there is a double gate so your dog won't get out. The drainage doesn't seem to be a problem, and the space is free from safety hazards. The one downside of any small dog run, no separate small dog corral for the tea cup breeds and the like. There is a stealth group of dog run folks who frequent the run at about sunset so if you want to be part of a meet and greet, check em out just before dark on just about any night.

Gantry Park Dog Run

This is a decent-sized dog run near the waterfront. Although this location is temporary, I find it to be a very good park to take my dog. One of the local artists took it upon himself to paint some nice murals on the plywood which borders the perimeter on 3 sides. The temporary status means that there is no running water, the parking is minimal at best and the run is a bit shy when it comes to shade and seating. The ever important double-gate works well and the fencing is great otherwise. I can't wait for the parks department to build the new park, but the wait is going to be 3 or more years, or so I hear. There is an association that helps with the development of all green spaces in and around the waterfront and would be a good place to start if you need any further information. Check out the Gantry Park Friend website for all things park related.

Astoria

Astoria Park Dog Run

Jackson Heights

Jackson Heights Canine Recreation Wonderland (Private dog run)

The Jackson Heights Canine Recreation Wonderland (JHCREW)is brand NEW dog run! However, it is a members only park that anyone can join. You will need to show your vacinnation records to the Jackson Heights Crew and pay a small fee to join. Click here to join their park. Located on 69th St at 35th Ave in Queens, NY. The park itself is really nice, and with two dogs runs I think it’s safe to say that every dog can be happy here. If your dog is over 25lbs he/she will go in the large dog run which is about 120' feet long by about 35' wide. the small dog run is 35' wide also, but shorter at 50' long. Plenty of space for everyone. This is a big difference between other dog runs and the JHCREW, the small dog run is equal in every way to the larger one, except 7/10 scale. Because of this, I know it will get used more frequently than most dog runs I see.

Within the dog run you will find benches aplenty and a few obstacles that the dogs will like. In the picture below you will see the 5' foot tall tubes that have been buried; the dogs can use these in their play activities, whether it be chase, tag or ball fetching.Check out more info at http://jhdogs.ning.com/

Woodside

Doughboy Plaza Dog Run

The Doughboy Plaza dog run is located at 56th St and Woodside Ave. Just north of where Skillman Ave. comes to an end at Roosevelt Avenue. Situated on the hill in the park, this tidy little dog run is ready to receive small dogs. Bigger dogs are ok here, just remember that the fences are only 4 foot high and the space is small. At an estimated 24 feet in length playtime space is adequate, but a dog "run" this is not.

Parking is decent along the two streets east and north of the park. When I visited, weeds were sprouting up here and there but I don't think they present much of a problem. The biggest downside to the park, is the entrance ramp leading up to it. It's a dirt path that is steep and somewhat slippery. Having said that, I think most will like the park and will be able to use it regularly. The park is under a slight refreshing courtesy of Lily and her dog group in the area. Greenpoint

MSGR McGolrick Park Dog Run

The McGolrick dog run is one good dog run! Located at 140 Driggs Ave (X Russell St.) in Brooklyn, NY. The park itself is pretty nice, and with two dogs runs I think it’s safe to say this is one wonderful destination for dog owners and dog-less owners alike. If you have a small dog, you can let them hang out in the smaller dog run… which is about 15? on the triangular side.

Parking is pretty handy, with available street parking located right next to the dog run. I noticed several open spots on the two most recent occasions visiting the park. If you live in the area check out the group of volunteers that help make the park as beautiful as it is, follow their group at http://www.meetup.com/Dogs-of-McGolrick-Park/ or you can email them at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Middle Village/ Forest Hills

Forest Park Dog Run

The Forest Park dog run is well maintained set of dog runs! Located at the corner of 85th St and Park Lane South in Queens, NY. The park itself is pretty nice, and with two dogs runs I think it’s safe to say this is one wonderful destination for dog owners. If you have a small dog, you can let them hang out in the smaller dog run… which is about 12? square.

The large dog run is perfect for any dog whether they be active or less active. I love the park benches with shade, and the obstacle course is cool too. The dog run is owned by the parks department, but thankfully maintained by a local group called K-9 Corral. Paul Toomey assumes control of improvements and maintenance. They have a group of dedicated volunteers like no other. So not only does the park enjoy volunteers, but they also garner support from the local businesses. In the past few years they have managed to get some great things done for the park. Among the latest improvements, an $80,000 staircase heading to the dog run!

Parking is difficult, with limited spaces available. I noticed very few open spots on the two most recent occasions visiting the park. If you live in the area check out the group of volunteers that help make the park as beautiful as it is. There is a volunteer group that maintains the park, and you can find out about their group by picking up a flier at the park itself, or by emailing Paul at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.  Bayside

Little Bay Dog Run

The Little Bay Dog Park is in the process of a remodel. Located at the corner of Utopia Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway, under the Throngs Neck Bridge. As for the Dog Run itself, and as I mentioned, its under construction at the present time. I snapped a few pics of the run, but I don’t think it to be necessary to post them. However, I do want to mention the facts: Access to the dog run will be available from both ends. Either at the end of Utopia Parkway, just north of the Cross Island Parkway, or due east the Totten Base entrance. There is a proper parking lot at this end, with plenty of space even on a Saturday. It is a 5 minute walk to the dog run from here, but worth every step along the nice shoreline access path. The parks website says the improvements for access and use in the dog run should be complete by mid-summer 2010. I won’t hold my breathe, but I will be back for a visit in July to check in on the progress.

Rockaway

Freeway Dog Park

The Freeway Dog Park is well maintained dog run! Located at the corner of 84th St and Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Beach, NY. The park itself is pretty nice, and with its size, I think makes it a  wonderful destination for dog owners. Parking is a bit tricky, but once there you will be treated to wide open spaces for your dog to run. While some dog runs should be classified as small play spaces instead, this dog run is nothing of the sort. Your dog never had it so good. Acres and acres of grass with which to frolic, fetch, sniff and relax. If there was ever a time that I consider moving here, I just might, knowing there is a HUGE dog run with easy access 24/7/365. You can join the local park association by visiting their website and contacting them for more info. Click here to go to ARF-ARF Rockaway website.
