Vaccination Requirements for Camp Bow Wow®

  • Bordetella (every 6 months) *There are two types of the Bordetella Vaccine, Intra-nasal, which has a three day incubation period & the Injection which has a seven day incubation period. Pups cannot be in camp during this incubation period to allow the medicine to take full effect.
  • Distemper
  • Rabies
  • Pups must be on a Flea & Tick Treatment

Why Must Are Pups Have These Vaccines?

Bordetella
Bordetella is given to prevent K9 Cough/Kennel Cough. K9 Cough is a lot like the flu for humans; it is an airborne virus. K9 Cough is a highly contagious upper respiratory infection which can be caused by a combination of a bacteria and a virus.

Who’s at Risk?

K9 Cough can occur whenever there are a number of pups confined together in an enclosed environment. K9 Cough is more likely to occur in a traditional kennel. It is very common in shelters and easily cured with medicine from your vet.

Note:
Bordetella is a preventative and does not guarantee your pup wont get K9 Cough, it acts as an aid to provide immunity to the Cough.

Symptoms
of K9 Cough
Dry, hacking, coarse cough, gagging, sounds like your pup has something caught in the back of their throat. Pups are usually quiet, apart from the coughing, normal temperature, seldom lose in appetite, coughing can become worse with physical exertion. The cough can be created by gently pressing the area of the throat over the trachea.

Distemper

Distemper is a highly contagious, viral disease which is often fatal. Distemper can be transmitted through contact with respiratory secretions; contact with fecal material or urine of infected pups or things that might have been contaminated by infected pups. It affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory and central nervous system.

Distemper is a very rare disease; it is like the measles for humans. The Distemper virus is very easy to kill with disinfectants, sunlight or heat. The virus can pass through coughed or sneezed droplets of saliva.

Who’s at Risk?

Young puppies between three and six months of age are most susceptible to the disease and are most likely to die from it. Non-immunized adults are highly at risk and old pups can develop mild cases of the disease.

Symptoms of Distemper
Fevers of 103-106F, depression, loss of appetite, coughing, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhea, eye inflammation, pneumonia. Neurological Symptoms can include seizures, muscle twitching, deterioration of mental abilities, loss of motor skills, complete or partial paralysis and increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli (pain or touch = Hyperesthesia)

Rabies
Rabies is a serious viral disease that harmfully affects the nervous system and nearly always fatal.

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal or host. Contact with the eyes, nose or mouth can pass on the virus. A bite from the host is the most likely and common way for a dog or any animal or person to contract the disease.

Who’s at Risk?

Mostly wild animals, but domesticated pups and kitties are also at risk.

Symptoms of Rabies

Symptoms will vary; affected pups may not show all signs. Initial signs include behavior and personality changes, fearfulness, anxiety, shyness, withdrawal from people and other pups, licking the site of the bit wound. Signs progress to restlessness, agitation and overreaction to sights and sounds. These lead to complete aggression, then disorientation followed by seizures. Pups may also experience paralysis in the head and neck area. This causes the inability to swallow, resulting in excess salivation, or "foaming at the mouth," and respiratory distress. Sadly and unfortunately, death is soon to follow.
