May 2009 - Siberian Husky Spotlight
Siberian Huskies are typically friendly, attentive, and sociable. Like many other Working Dogs, though, they can be very independent and hard to manage. An experienced owner capable of firm training is a must. Siberian Huskies are very intelligent and respond well to training, which should begin at a young age. Although Huskies do not bark much, they are prone to whining and vocalizing a “yowl” sound – this can be stamped out through good training. Because of their friendly and inquisitive nature and their reluctance to bark, Siberian Huskies make poor watchdogs. They tend to be very gentle with small children.
Siberian Huskies are energetic dogs who require a good deal of exercise—at least 30 to 60 minutes per day. They are also talented escape artists and have a strong prey drive - a high, sturdy fence and obedience training to keep your dog from chasing the family cat is a must. In addition, they need regular grooming care, consisting of bathing, brushing, and care of eyes, teeth, ears, feet and nails. Twice a year Siberian Huskies shed most of their undercoat over the course of two or three weeks. They are social dogs and do not like being left alone, and will be happier if they have a companion dog.
We have many great Husky Campers who have lots of fun at camp. Check out some of them below. Scroll over their pictures to see their names! As you can see, they come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.

Adopt Me!
NICKI- A CBW family is being transferred to Dubai and needs to find a good home for their dog. Nicki is an energetic 19 month-old spayed female Boxer/Boston Terrier mix. She is petite, weighing in around 30lbs. Nicki is house-broken and crate trained, but sometimes gets anxious and does not like to be left alone for long periods. She has stayed at Camp Bow Wow numerous times and loves being there playing with other dogs. She currently lives with three children (8, 10 and 12) and she is wonderful with them and their friends. Nicki loves playing ball and running in the yard. She would benefit from some additional obedience training. If you are interested in Nicki, please give us a call at 732-805-0888.

Tick Removal 101
It's that great time of year when our dogs are running around and playing outside, but there's nothing worse than getting that occasional tick. If you're absolutely sure that it's a tick and you're going to try to remove it yourself, you really have to know what you're doing. What's the best way to remove that little pest?
Grasp the tick firmly wth hemostats (aka tweezers) as close to the skin as possible. Pull gently but firmly straight away from the skin until the tick comes out. Do not twist. Avoid grasping the tick’s abdomen. This can cause regurgitation of stomach contents into your pet, increasing the likelihood of Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and other scary tick-borne diseases.
Some other points: tick prevention is better than tick removal. Frontline is a great product, however no tick preventative is 100% effective.
Finally, think at least six times (twice is nowhere near enough) before removing a tick from your cat. Healthy cats almost never suffer from tick infestation due to their good grooming habits.
