American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Program

Welcome to the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program. Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

The goals of the Canine Good Citizen program are to 1) Teach responsible dog ownership to owners and 2) Provide basic training and good manners to dogs.  The key component of the CGC Program is the 10-step CGC Test.

1) Accept a friendly Stranger

2) Sit politely for petting

3) Appearance and Grooming

4) Out for a walk (walking on a loose leash)

5) Walk through a crowd

6) Sit and Down on Command/Staying in place

7) Come when called

8) Reaction to another dog

9) Reactions to Distractions

10) Supervised Sparation

Classes will occur in an eight (8) week session one night a week, for one hour.  Kim Ostermann will be our trainer and we are very excited to have her as a part of our training team!

Kim Ostermann and husband Neal have lived in Beatrice for 21 yrs., her son Derek is proudly severing in the US Navy and daughter Mariah is a Junior at BHS, she also has an 11 yr old black lab Sampson and a 2 yr old yellow lab Remi.  Kim volunteers with many organizations in Beatrice including TeamMates and Meals on Wheels.  In 2002 she began volunteering at Beatrice Humane Society serving on the Board of Directors and helping with many functions as well as fostering many shelter dogs.  She then branched out and began volunteering at NOAH’S a local guide/service dog training facility learning dog obedience and service dog training techniques.  In August of 2005 she experienced the joy of being a puppy raiser for NOAH’S; spending the next 1 1/2 years training and preparing the dog for placement with his new partner with disabilities.  She has also trained a companion dog for Domesti-PUPS that was placed with his special person in September of 2008.  In January of 2004 she helped to develop K-9 PenPals; a Shelter Dog Obedience program at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and also served as a volunteer trainer for the program.  In 2006 she became a Certified AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator.

offering Dog Obedience Training!

We're teaming up with the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program.  The purpose of CGC is to ensure that our favorite companion, the dog, can be a respected member of the community because it has been trained to be well behaved in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs.  The CGC Program lasts 8 weeks and will occur for only one hour in the evening once a week.  Classes will begin at the end of April.  For more information or to book your spot in one of our classes call 474-WOOF (9663).  Go to our "Training" tab for more informations, your couch will thank you!
